Francois
Scholtz of Transwerk has won a Merit Award in the Project category for the
10M5 coach design for the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARC).
“It is a superb example of successful design and development, ”
said Transport Minister Jeff Radebe. The 10M5
coach design is a refinement of the 10M4 design of 2001 and the 10M3 of
2004. The new design boasts improved safety features, enhanced facilities
and requires less maintenance. Transwerk was called upon to upgrade SARC’s
5M2A coaches to the new 10M class. About 6 t of 3CR12 was used per coach
to rebuild the body shell. “3CR12 is a good, corrosion-resistant material
that permits the paint aesthetics of choice, and fully justifies the 30-year
guarantee,” says Scholtz.
“Transwerk
has wide experience in the refurbishing and modernisation of aging rolling
stock. This has been combined with fresh ideas to produce a safe, economic
modular design that will serve commuters and operators well into the future.
Based on experience and commuter requirements, Transwerk designed, developed
and built the 10M5, the latest and most modern in the range. Tough, modern
materials have produced a good-looking, practical and hygiene-friendly suburban
train that is versatile, easy to maintain, fire-retardant and vandal-resistant.” The design
has been tested to the UIC 566-OR standard.
