DESERT WOLF
Product : Design and manufacture of off-road trailers

Camping trailers are subject to a high level of stone damage and sandblasting that no paint can withstand making
stainless steel ideal for this application. The corrosion-resistant material ensures that the Desert Wolf luxury camping
trailer’s appearance is maintained and that it is durable and corrosion resistant.
The original trailer was developed ten
years ago by husband and wife team Hennie and Henriette Kieser using CAD technology and has evolved according to
market needs
over the years.

The stainless steel camping trailer is a creative, innovative and practical application of stainless steel, which has
created much interest among the public at camping exhibitions over the past ten years. “Quite simply, it is the Rolls Royce
of camping trailers that boasts an excellent design, high durability and exceptional quality,” says Kieser.

HALDANE MARTIN
Product : Design and manufacture of "Zulu Mama" chair woven by SA rural woman using recycled milk
bottles  and stainless steel tubing

The uniquely South African chair was designed by Cape Town-based industrial designer Haldane Martin and comprises a
basket seat woven from recycled milk bottles and a bent stainless steel frame.

Martin hopes to manufacture the Zulu Mama for the local restaurant and hospitality industries, enlisting 20 to 50 township
women to weave the basket seats and a black empowered business in Kraaifontein that operates a stainless steel bending
machine to produce the frames.

In this way he will create employment opportunities for members of South Africa’s previously disadvantaged community.

Triple-bottom line principles of business, environmental and social sustainability were applied throughout the design
process to ensure long-term sustainability and balanced wealth creation in the social, environmental and economic spheres.
The result of this process is an innovative, creative and sustainable product that is aesthetically appealing to boot.

In addition, the envisioned market potential for this product combined with the recycling and manufacturing process
required to produce these café chairs will ensure the sustainability of the Zulu Mama going forward.

NICOLA SAKS
Product : Design and manufacture of photo-luminescent house number

A stainless steel metal number, visible by day, is secured in a plastic surround moulded with a photo-luminescent pigment
that absorbs light during the day and emits it at night to ensure that the number is always visible.

This innovative and creative concept was devised by Cape Town-based designer Nicola Saks.“While the brushed stainless
steel metal number component is decorative, fashionable, durable and corrosion-resistant, the plastic surround is functional
in that it will glow in the dark and secure the product to a surface,” she says.   This easy-to-assemble product can be
screwed into a wall or a door or it can stand proud of a wall and will be available in a variety of typefaces.

STAINLESS INNOVATIVE DEZINES
Product : Design and manufacture of exclusive contemporary furniture

The Injasuti entrance table and mirror designed and manufactured by Middelburg-based company, Stainless Innovative
Dezines,  won a merit award.

The entrance table and mirror are part of a range of products that includes dining tables, coffee tables and display cabinets.
Stainless Innovative Dezines was established earlier this year by Yusuf Gardee, an entrepreneur nurtured in the
Mpumalanga Stainless Initiative (MSI), a manufacturing incubator project initiated to create opportunities for small,
medium and micro-enterprises (SMME’s) to establish sustainable businesses in the stainless steel industry.

Since exhibiting at Decorex in August this year, several Johannesburg-based furniture distributors and showrooms have
shown a keen interest in Stainless Innovative Dezines, and the young company hopes to become a leading producer of
premium quality, designer stainless steel furniture for both the local and international markets.     The company plans to
expand its manufacturing capability. In so doing, it will provide training and create employment opportunities that will
impact on the industrial growth of the Mpumalanga region and South Africa at large, maintaining high manufacturing
standards to produce premium products.

TRANSFAB
Product : Design and manufacture of vertical heat exchangers

An unconventional vertical heat exchanger manufactured by Secunda-based welders and boilermakers, Transfab
Engineering, has won a merit award.

The fabrication of the vertical heat exchanger vessel was a fast track project that took 25 days to assemble and was
delivered to Transfab’s client, the Merisol plant in Sasolburg a day ahead of schedule.

The product, an alternative to an overhead cooler that could not be delivered to the Merisol plant in time for its start up,
was developed by Transfab based on design specifications set by MegChem Engineering and Drafting. The unit is capable of
low-pressure drop across the heat exchanger vessel.   The vessel’s internals consist of five can sections, each of which
comprises two assembled cylindrical sections, welded at the ends to form narrow channels between the cylinders. The five
sections fit snugly into each other with interlinking piping connecting the can sections. The inlet and outlet of the internals
connect the external piping, for the supply and outlet of the cooling water. The product flows over the plate surfaces at high
velocity, cooling the off gas in the process.

VESTO
Project : Design and manufacture of single-pot cooking stove

Concept for this unique product was developed by Crispin Pemberton-Pigott, who has been working in the field of
appropriate technology for 27 years, and engineer Rina King.

They researched the market in Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa to create an innovative product that suited the
Southern African lower income environment.
The single-pot cooking stove was designed for use in Southern Africa where
biomass fuels such as briquettes, charcoal and wood are readily available. The excellent performance of this multi-fuel stove
is based on its unique design and the inherent properties of 3CR12 stainless steel from which it is manufactured.
  The Vesto
is comprised of components manufactured in South Africa and Swaziland. The overwhelming demand for this unique product
has kindled the interest of the Mpumalanga Stainless Initiative, which is assisting Pemberton-Pigott and King to establish a
dedicated Vesto factory in Middelburg.

To date, the Vesto has been distributed in Africa Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and Tanzania, as well
as in Holland and the USA.

ZAB ZABB
Project : Design and manufacture of exclusive pot and candle stands

Utilising laser-cutting technology, architect and designer Isabelle Rolland developed an artistic and versatile pot stand,
based on the concept of a puzzle that could be declined into two separate yet functional objects.

“One usually has two hot dishes to set on a table and rarely has two matching pot stands,” she says.   This concept has
since evolved into a range of “yin yang” puzzle geometry that allows the two parts of the puzzle, both of a functional size
and aesthetic design, to be balanced and thus support two standard size hot dishes. The combination of laser cut stainless
steel and wood creates a visually stunning contrast and a precisely fitted puzzle
.

Demountable candle stands are another concept based on Rolland’s notion that tableware can serve as art. She designed
them to be both decorative and easy to store. The main body of each candle stand is supported by three blades locked in
place by a ring. When fully assembled, the object is perfectly stable and can be quite large; when disassembled, it fits
snugly into a drawer.
